Mumbai Indians’ past performance and IPL titles

Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have been one of the most talked-about teams in the history of the league due to their performances and the comebacks made by the team over the past few years.

2008-2013

Mumbai Indians have had a star-studded lineup since the first season of the IPL, which included players like Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya, but they did not perform well in the first few years and finished fifth and seventh respectively.

Having said that, MI came back strong the following season by reaching the final, where they took on Chennai Super Kings and started a rivalry that has lasted till now.

The 2010 season was the beginning of the decade for Mumbai Indians, as the team made the playoffs in the next two seasons and won their first IPL title in 2013.

As has been the case with the team, MI did not start that particular season on a positive note, resulting in Ricky Ponting handing over the captaincy to young Rohit Sharma, a decision that changed the fortunes of the team forever.

2014-2019

The following season MI won three IPL titles every alternate year in 2015, 2017 and 2019, making it the most successful team in the tournament in terms of the number of titles won.

Coincidentally, two of those three wins came against Chennai Super Kings, while the then MS Dhoni-led team was not a part of the 2017 season, in which MI won the IPL trophy for the fourth time.

Interestingly, since Rohit became the captain, MI has qualified for the playoffs in every edition till 2020, except 2016 and 2018.

In two of those seasons, MI made a spectacular comeback after losing five matches in the first half of the tournament and finished in the top four.

2020-2025

Mumbai Indians are only the second team in IPL history to defend their title, and they did so under the leadership of Rohit Sharma in 2020.

However, a lot has changed since then, and Mumbai Indians are still in search of their sixth title, having failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

One of the major and highly debated changes made by MI in this time period is with regard to captaincy, with Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as the captain of the team in 2024.

Although the decision was not taken in good spirit by the fans, it seemed like they had accepted the fact that Hardik would be leading the team from now on, which was evident from his reaction last season.

Players retained by Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians have covered most of their bases with retained options in the form of Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Tilak Verma.
