After being ignored for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, three local cricketers on Monday took the extreme step and attacked Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) head coach S Venkataraman.

The attack was brutal and the coach suffered head injuries and a shoulder fracture. An FIR has been filed after the incident, and regarding the matter, S Rajesh, sub-inspector of Sedarapet police station, said (as quoted by Indian Express):

“Venkatraman received 20 stitches on his forehead, but his condition is stable. The said players are absconding, and we are trying to trace them. Further details will be revealed in due course.”

However, the Cricket Association of Pondicherry was also exposed in a report by the Indian Express for not treating its players adequately.

The report claimed that “outside cricketers” were presented as “locals” using fake educational certificates and Aadhaar addresses, and BCCI secretary Devjit Saikia has promised to investigate the matter. He said:

“Some serious allegations have been made in the news and hence the BCCI will look into the matter soon.”

Karthikeyan Jayasundaram, A Aravindraj and S Santosh Kumaran have been named in the FIR.

Coming back to the incident, S Venkataraman has named locals Karthikeyan Jayasundaram, A Aravindraj and S Santosh Kumaran in the FIR and accused Bharathidasan Pondicherry Cricketers’ Forum secretary G Chandran of instigating the attack.

“On December 8, 2025, at around 11 pm, I was in the indoor nets inside the CAP complex, when senior Pondicherry cricketers Karthikeyan, Aravindraj and Santosh Kumaran came and started misbehaving with me, insisting that I was the reason for his non-selection in the SMAT (Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy) team. When Aravindraj caught hold of me, Karthikeyan took away the bat that Santosh Kumaran had. Venkatraman said in his complaint, “They wanted to kill me. Chandran had told them that they would get the chance only if they killed me.”

Meaning, Bharathidasan Pondicherry Cricketers Forum has rejected the allegations made against Chandran by S Venkatraman.
