Tata IPL 2024 Match 49, CSK vs PBKS – Match Report
Punjab Kings (PBKS) registered a seven-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. PBKS bowlers did a great job to restrict the strong CSK batting line-up to 162. In reply, their batsmen took charge with confidence. This is PBKS’s fourth win in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
PBKS won the toss and elected to field first, full of confidence after their recent heroics in Kolkata β where they recorded the most successful run-chase in T20 history. CSK made some changes in their team and Richard Gleeson was included. Mathisha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande were not included for them. PBKS remained unchanged.
CSK’s innings got off to a good start with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane making good starts. Initially, they were cautious and took time to explore the boundaries from time to time. When Gaikwad hit one over slip and towards third man in the second over, he got his 50th four of Tata IPL 2024.
CSK did well rotating the strike, but the real spark in the powerplay came in the final over when Sam Curran came to bowl. The last four balls of the powerplay were for fours β the first being a leg bye. Rahane displayed great class to hit fours over mid-wicket and off side on the last three balls. CSK ended the powerplay at 55 for no loss β a good start.
Then came a phase where PBKS pulled things back, and this was due to some good tight bowling from their spinners Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar. In the next eight overs, PBKS did not concede a single boundary and took three wickets. CSK managed to score 45 runs in this phase.
Brar started with five runs in the seventh over and Chahar supported him with only four runs in the next over. The ninth over proved to be game changing for PBKS. Rahane (29 off 24 balls) tried to slog one over midwicket but only reached the height and was caught in the deep. Shivam Dubey, who plays big shots, came in at number three and was LBW while trying to sweep his first valid ball.

In the very next over, Chahar swung a ball back off Ravindra Jadeja and trapped him LBW for just two runs. This forced CSK to introduce Sameer Rizvi as an impact player in place of Rahane. At half time their score was 71 runs for three wickets.
The next few overs remained tough for CSK as PBKS maintained good channels. Brar ended his tough spell with two wickets for 17 runs. After this Kagiso Rabada bowled a good over in the 13th over. The boundary drought for CSK ended when Harshal Patel started his spell with five wides in the 15th over. The first boundary with the bat in nine overs came in the 16th over when Rizvi dodged the wicketkeeper and hit a four. Rabada dismissed him on the next ball as he upper-cut it to third-man, where Harshal took a very good catch.
CSK needed a boost in the end and got it from Gaikwad, who attacked Curran in the 17th over. The first ball was given a no-ball for height and was cut through the off side for four runs. The free-hit was hit for a six over long-on. A strong six was hit on the leg side on the last ball.

Gaikwad scored another half-century in the tournament. Moeen Ali also hit a four and a six off Arshdeep Singh before the left-hander dismissed Gaikwad, who finished with 62.
MS Dhoni walked in amid the usual fanfare and had to contend with Chahar, who was brought in to bowl the 19th over. The leg spinner kept it very tight, conceding only three runs and dismissing Moeen. Chahar ended his spell with two wickets for 16 runs. In the last over, Dhoni hit a four from the off side and a six over cover. However, he was run out on the last ball as he attempted to take a second run β the first time he has been dismissed this year.

Chasing the target of 163 runs, PBKS looked in control from the beginning. It was difficult for CSK right from the start as Deepak Chahar walked off the field due to injury after bowling the first two balls of the innings. Prabhsimran Singh started his innings aggressively, hitting a six and a four. Gleeson, who was making his Tata IPL debut, got the first breakthrough for CSK in the fourth over when Prabhsimran top-edged it to mid-off.
Then came the partnership that laid the foundation for a successful run-chase. Jonny Bairstow and Riley Rossouw together added 64 runs in just 37 balls. By attacking CSK’s bowling, they put themselves in the driver’s seat. The shots were free-flowing and aggressive. CSK tried to rotate their bowlers so that the batsmen did not settle down – but that did not stop Bairstow and Rossouw from hitting at least one four per over.

The stand eventually ended when Dube hit a boundary on his second ball, forcing Bairstow (46 off 30 balls) to play an upper-cut into Dhoni’s gloves. Even after this, Rossouw maintained his aggressive stance and also hit two sixes. However, in the 12th over, he scored 43 runs by bowling a full-toss off Shardul Thakur. In 12 overs, PBKS was on target at 113 for three.
