Tata IPL 2024 Match 51, MI vs KKR – Match Report
In a dramatic game where the pendulum swung from one end to the other, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered a 24-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI). The margin of victory does not reflect how close the match was, but both sides had their moments, however, KKR remained patient and won against MI at the Wankhede Stadium after 12 years in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.
MI put KKR in to bat and the confidence in that decision showed in the early stages. KKR’s innings had everything in the powerplay – wickets, runs and drama. At the end of six overs, the visiting team’s score was 57 runs for four wickets and after one ball they lost their fifth wicket. That phase saw some good strokeplay, but also some good bowling which gave MI early wickets. It all started in the first over when Phil Salt top-edged and was caught at cover by Tilak Verma – amid some confusion with Naman Dheer. Nuwan Thushara was the bowler who opened for MI.
There was some aggressive strokeplay, but KKR wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Thushara again struck two blows in the third over when he dismissed first Angkrish Raghuvanshi and then Shreyas Iyer. This brought Venkatesh Iyer to the crease, who took over the innings and batted for KKR till the end of the innings. Sunil Narine welcomed Hardik Pandya with a six down the leg side in the fifth over, but the MI captain got his revenge when he bowled him on the next ball.

Runs were scored for KKR but wickets were a matter of concern. Soon after the powerplay, Piyush Chawla dismissed Rinku Singh cheaply. KKR were in deep trouble at 57 runs for five wickets in the seventh over. That’s when Manish Pandey was unveiled as an impact player. This was a crucial move as Pandey and Venkatesh added 83 runs in the next ten overs. This helped KKR recover and ensured that their bowlers had something to bowl at.

Partnerships were measured and limits were imposed to ensure the pace of the innings. Pandey scored 42 runs in 31 balls with the help of two fours and two sixes. KKR continued to lose wickets in the backend, with Venkatesh going well past his half-century. They were eventually out for 169 β Venkaresh was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah on the last ball of the innings. While Thushara caused damage to MI by taking three wickets in the powerplay, Bumrah was the best bowler in the slog overs by taking three wickets. He took three wickets for 18 runs.

A target of 170 would have given MI the confidence that they have a good chance – especially considering the trends in the Tata IPL. Ishan Kishan made a good start in the second over by hitting a four and a six off Mitchell Starc. However, while trying to hit another big shot, he was caught out by the left-handed batsman. Dheer came at number three but was bowled by Varun Chakraborty in the fifth over.

The play almost mirrored the KKR powerplay as MI got a few boundaries at that stage but lost a lot of wickets. Rohit Sharma was out to Narine in the sixth over while trying to pull a run to midwicket. MI ended the powerplay at 46 for three.
While Suryakumar Yadav looked stable at one end, MI’s wickets kept falling at the other end. till 12 o’clockth In the over, their score was reduced to 71 for six β the target looked very far away. Narine and Chakravarthy kept up the pressure by earning the wickets of Nehal Wadhera and Tilak respectively. Andre Russell gave a big blow to Hardik Pandya by dismissing him early.
This brought Tim David and Suryakumar together. Suryakumar decided to attack KKR and help MI get back into the match. He was in his typical aggressive mood when he took 20 runs off Vaibhav Arora in the 14th over and completed his half-century in 30 balls. The required rate looked to be under control, especially with David and Suryakumar in the middle.
As the slog overs approached, KKR also felt the pressure. Eventually, MI needed 51 runs from the last five. Then Russell returned to the attack and put Suryakumar on top.

MI’s trump-card was out for 56 runs. David’s presence kept hopes alive for MI and when he hit a six down the leg-side to Mitchell Starc in the 19th over, the hosts still had a chance to reach 26 for 11.
