Tata IPL 2024 Match 52, RCB vs GT – Match Report

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) won by four wickets against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. A good bowling performance restricted GT to just 147 runs and an impressive start from the RCB openers set the stage for victory. Although there was some nervousness during the run-chase, RCB were eventually in a comfortable position to get the two points.

RCB won the toss and decided to bowl first on a pitch which was providing a lot of help to the bowlers at the beginning of the day. RCB’s early bowlers took full advantage of those conditions and shook GT’s early batting. At the end of the powerplay, GT’s score was 23 for three – the lowest score in the first six overs in Tata IPL 2024. This is a reflection of the performance of RCB bowlers.

GT faced a tough time in the powerplay as the scores showed. However, the most telling thing was that only two fours were hit in the powerplay. While RCB started with the left-arm spin of Swapnil Singh, they changed the pace in the next over and maintained the same approach for the next seven overs. Mo. Siraj was the choice of bowlers at that stage. He sent Wriddhiman Saha to the wicketkeeper in the second over and later, took a top-edge from Shubman Gill’s bat and had him caught on the off-side. In the last over of the powerplay, GT’s leading run-scorer this year Sai Sudarshan tried to pull Cameron Green and was caught at mid-off.

GT then put together a good partnership courtesy of David Miller (30 runs off 20 balls) and Shahrukh Khan (37 runs off 24 balls). Together, they added 61 runs from 37 balls – giving GT hopes of posting a decent total. This was wise as he rotated the strike and hit boundaries at regular intervals. Miller got his first six of the match in the 10th over when he hit Karn Sharma for a strong six over midwicket. Shahrukh followed suit in the next over when he hit Green to long-on. After this Miller tried his hand again against Karna in 12th Over but hits it straight to long-on.

Soon after, Shahrukh was found out of the field due to a direct hit from Virat Kohli. GT was once again in trouble at 87 for five in the 13th over. After this Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia tried to form an aggressive partnership. Tewatia was particularly aggressive on Karn in the 16th over and scored 19 runs with the help of one six and three fours. Rashid also hit two fours and a six in his 18-run cameo, until he was caught by Yash Dayal while attempting a scoop. Tewatia was also out soon after trying to pull, but the ball went towards third-man, where Vijaykumar Vaish took a brilliant catch.

GT introduced Vijay Shankar as his impact sub to strengthen his batting; However, the fall of three wickets in the last over meant that GT were all out for 147 runs.

RCB’s response early on was aggressive and decisive – led by their captain Faf du Plessis and Kohli. In the very first over, RCB’s intent became clear when Kohli hit a six down the ground to Mohit Sharma and ended the over by flicking it through mid-wicket to clear the fence. Du Plessis welcomed Joshua Little after scoring 20 runs in the second over. The RCB captain hit three fours and a six to take his innings forward. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who made his Tata IPL debut for GT, got a glimpse of du Plessis’s abilities when he was driven for four after hitting a six over long-on.

Du Plessis’s batting was such that he looked invincible. Kohli had the best seat in the house watching his captain demolish all sides. For a while, Kohli did not have much strike, but in the fifth over he emulated his captain by hitting two consecutive sixes off Suthar. In the same over, Du Plessis completed his half-century in just 18 balls. Du Plessis’ performance ended in the last over of the powerplay when he was dismissed by Little after scoring 64 runs off just 23 balls. With 92 runs in the powerplay, RCB were looking well on their way to victory.

Then there was a slight twist as GT made it difficult for RCB. Noor Ahmed and Little had a big contribution in it. In the seventh over, Noor quickly dismissed Jacques – who had scored a century against GT in the previous game. Impact player Rajat Patidar pulled a single off Little’s ball at midwicket in the next over. And three balls later, Maxwell fell in almost the same fashion, pulling it to deep square-leg. The pace of scoring slowed down a bit. Little got the fourth wicket by getting Green caught at third man in the 10th over.

However, the real upset came in the 11th over when Kohli (42 off 27 balls) gave a single to Saha off the bowling of Noor. From 92 for no loss to 117 for six, GT had struggled to make a comeback. While there was panic in the crowd, the middle had enough experience to take them home.

Dinesh Karthik kept his team calm during the storm and Swapnil supported him a lot. His intelligent batting ensured that RCB achieved a big win in the 14th over.
