Tata IPL 2024 Match 58, PBKS vs RCB – Match Report

A blockbuster batting performance led by Virat Kohli (92 off 47) and a brilliant fielding effort helped Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 60 runs to register their fourth consecutive win and keep their chances alive at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.

After being out twice in the beginning of the innings, Kohli tried his luck and played a brilliant inning of 92 runs off 47 and PBKS had to suffer for it. He shared a stormy 76-run partnership with Rajat Patidar, who played a brilliant reply innings of 55 (23), which helped set the stage. Cameron Green (46 off 27) and Dinesh Karthik (18 off 7) provided crucial leads in the final moments to take the visitors to a strong score of 241/7.

A brilliant running back catch from Faf du Plessis, a sensational off-balance direct-hit run out from Kohli and Karn Sharma’s crucial spell of 2/29 made all the difference for RCB as they bowled out PBKS for 181 in 17 overs.

RCB had a good start defending 242 runs and Swapnil Singh had Prabhsimran Singh out LBW in the very first over. Riley Rossouw started well with consecutive fours off his first two balls. RCB could have dismissed Rossouw early, but on a day of drops, Faf du Plessis could not save a tough chance after Rossouw scored a run to backward point. RCB had to suffer the consequences of the PBKS batsman being aggressive against Mohammed. In the next over, Siraj hit three fours and a six. Jonny Bairstow also changed gears and the pair added 65 runs off just 30 balls, before Lockie Ferguson broke the partnership in the last over of the powerplay, having Bairstow caught at mid-off. Faf du Plessis took a brilliant catch while running backwards and PBKS reached 75/2 at the end of the powerplay.

However, Rossouw continued to be powerful and hit a four and a six off Green to bring up his half-century in just 21 balls. With Rossouw performing brilliantly, captain Faf du Plessis called on in-form Karn Sharma to do the job, and he obliged his skipper, having Rossouw (61 off 27) caught at long on, who was making a strong comeback after being hit for a four and a six in the first over. This changed the match. The clever leg spinner once again demonstrated his bounceback ability and after hitting a six and a four in the first over, he clean bowled impact player Jitesh Sharma in his next over. PBKS lost three wickets in quick succession as Swapnil Singh sent Liam Livingstone back for a duck in the next over. Shashank Singh looked confident in the middle, but a sensational fielding effort ended his 37-run innings (off 19 balls) as an off-balance direct hit from Kohli fell short. This was another important moment of the match.

RCB continued to take wickets regularly in the form of Mohammed. Siraj had Ashutosh Sharma out LBW and Lockie Ferguson clean bowled captain Sam Curran to reduce PBKS to 170/8. After this, Siraj gave a big win to RCB by sending back Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh in the 17th over.

Earlier, PBKS won the toss and decided to field. The match got off to a great start as Kohli was caught twice in the first three overs. Debutant Vidavath Kavarappa took a roller coaster ride of mixed emotions in his first two overs. He could have got the wicket of Virat Kohli on the third ball of his IPL career as Kohli hit a shot high in the air on the off side, but Ashutosh Sharma, running in behind, could not grab a tough chance. Du Plessis added salt to PBKS’ wishes by ending the over with two fours.

Kawerappa, however, did not have to wait long for his first wicket as he had Faf du Plessis caught at deep point in his next over. He could have caught Kohli again in the same over, but Riley Rossouw could not retain a difficult chance at cover after Kohli destroyed the ball with full force.

After this, Kohli and Jacques increased their aggression by hitting two fours and a six off Sam Curran. At the other end, Kohli’s battle with Kawerappa was becoming interesting. The RCB batsman stormed down the track and hit a straight six off the first ball of the fifth over, but Kawerappa bounced back and took a brilliant catch of the unlucky-looking Jack off Harshal Patel at short fine leg. Two balls later, Kaveerappa could have got his third wicket when Rajat Patidar lofted a ball over long leg, but to Kaveerappan’s frustration and disappointment, Harshal missed an easy chance.

Patidar made Harshal pay for the drop as he hit three fours in his first over, which was the last over of the powerplay as RCB reached 56/2 at the end of the first six overs. The pair hit a flurry of sixes and hit five sixes in the next two overs.

But Patidar was lucky in the middle, as Jonny Bairstow could not take advantage of a difficult chance after Patidar took a single off Rahul Chahar. The pair made a partnership of 50 runs in just 21 balls and Patidar also completed his half-century in 21 balls by hitting a six off Curran. However, the PBKS skipper came back strongly in the same over and provided some relief to the home side as he had the flamboyant Patidar (55 off 23) caught three balls later, before play was halted due to rain and hailstorm.

PBKS pulled things back a bit after the break and conceded 14 runs in two overs. Kohli then increased the score by hitting consecutive fours on Livingstone and completed his sixth fifty-plus score of the season. Kohli and Green continued to play some powerful and enjoyable strokes and added 92 runs in 45 balls.

However, Kohli could not complete his century and hit a four and a six off Arshdeep, but was out to deep point on the next ball at the score of 92.

Dinesh Karthik played a good inning of 18 runs in 7 balls, but Harshal Patel bowled brilliantly in the last over, taking three wickets (Dinesh Karthik, Mahipal Lomror and Cameron Green (46 off 27)) and giving away just three runs, as RCB finished at 241/7. RCB introduced Yash Dayal as their impact player in place of Rajat Patidar at the start of the second innings.
