The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly unlikely to hold a review meeting ahead of the upcoming five-match T20 series against South Africa. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has faced criticism for his tactics, is unlikely to be removed from his role despite a disappointing performance in Test cricket.
India suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of South Africa in the Test series. After the red-ball series, the Men in Blue will now turn their focus to the three-match ODI series, followed by five T20Is. The first ODI of the upcoming series will begin on Sunday, November 30 at the SCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.
India suffered a 408-run defeat at home and a 0-2 defeat
India lost to South Africa by 408 runs in the second test in Guwahati. Chasing a mammoth target of 549, India were all out for 140, wiping out the series 0-2 after losing the first Test in Kolkata. The 408-run defeat is India’s biggest defeat in terms of runs in Test cricket.
The result was historic for South Africa, who won a Test series in India for the first time in 25 years. In particular, the poor performance led to strong criticism of both the players and the team management from fans on social media.
It is noteworthy that this series was India’s third whitewash on home soil after similar defeats to South Africa in 2000 and New Zealand in 2024. Last year, when India faced a whitewash against New Zealand, Gautam Gambhir was also the head coach.
Amidst concerns over selection, Gautam Gambhir will remain coach till 2027.
Journalist Abhishek Tripathi told that BCCI is not planning any review meeting before the T20 series. He said that Gautam Gambhir’s post as head coach is safe till 2027 and there is no discussion about removing him.
However, Tripathi mentioned that the BCCI is unhappy with the selection committee, particularly what it sees as its over-reliance on all-rounders. The team management chose several all-rounders in the Test series, and some of them were under-utilized with the ball.
