Donna Ganguly, famous Odissi dancer and wife of former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, has approached Kolkata Police after facing abusive behaviour. She lodged a complaint at the Thakurpukur police station, stating that she was receiving obscene, derogatory and body-shaming comments on social media.

Donna has spent many years contributing to the development of classical art. He developed his career through frequent performances, collaborations and cultural events, which helped promote Odissi across the country. She also runs a dance institute where young students are trained in this tradition.

The issue started after Donna Ganguly’s performance at the Kolkata Film Festival, when a Facebook page started posting objectionable comments about her. Donna has described the posts as defamatory and said they were intended to damage her reputation.

“Defamatory posts surfaced around Donna Ganguly’s dance performance at the Kolkata Film Festival. The complaint specifically pointed to a Facebook page which targeted her,” the police officer was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

“She has described these acts as derogatory and said that the purpose of the post was to tarnish her honour,” the officer said.

Donna Ganguly submitted screenshots of the offending post as well as a mobile number linked to the associated Facebook page. Police said they are tracking the posts and numbers to identify the people behind the comments.

“We are working to identify the persons responsible for the objectionable posts. We are tracing the posts and associated mobile numbers to identify the culprits,” the officer said.

In his complaint, he said that users embarrassed him and posted derogatory comments which damaged his reputation. Investigators are now examining the evidence provided by him to trace the culprits.

Noting that Donna Ganguly had provided screenshots of the offending post along with a mobile number linked to the Facebook page.

The complaint was lodged at Thakurpukur police station earlier this week and an FIR has been registered against unknown persons. Police have invoked Section 79 of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS), which deals with acts, words or gestures intended to insult the dignity of a woman.

In her complaint letter submitted at Thakurpukur PS, according to Times of India, Dona wrote, “I am writing to formally lodge a complaint against a Facebook page which has publicly humiliated and embarrassed me. The defamatory material posted against me is extremely defamatory and has harmed my dignity and reputation. As a public figure and an artiste, I consider it to be defamatory in nature… The actions of this page violate my rights and freedom of expression online.” Are tantamount to harassment.”

Sourav and Donna Ganguly married in 1997 and the couple have a daughter. Sourav captained India in all formats before retiring in 2008. After his playing career, he moved into cricket administration and now serves as the President of the Bengal Cricket Association.
