Cricket Australia (CA) could face massive financial losses after the first Test of the ongoing Ashes 2025-26 series against England at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Saturday, November 22 ends in two days.

Recently, Cricket Australia (CA) had predicted a record year, but the Perth pitch for the first Test actually proved to be a cracker as the surface was full of bounce, pace and movement, keeping the fast bowlers on their toes throughout the two days.

CA suffered a loss of crores due to early end of the first match of Ashes 2025-26.

The Optus Stadium pitch was so lively and challenging that the first match of the Ashes 2025-26 between England and Australia turned into a low-scoring thriller and ended in just two days, causing a financial blow to the hosts.

The Ashes 2025-26 opener turned into complete chaos from the start, with 19 wickets falling on the opening day at the Optus Stadium.

Even on a Perth pitch that was bouncing, seaming and almost everything, the England cricket team somehow managed to take a lead of 40 runs in the first innings.

Australia beats England in Perth to take 1-0 lead in Ashes series

This lead seemed huge on such a difficult surface in Perth. And when England reached 100/1 in their second innings, they looked to be in complete control, but then, as usual, poor shot selection, confused batting and a total loss of control turned it into a nightmare for the touring team.

They failed to score big, as Australia needed only 205 runs to win the first Test, and made the chase look easy. Chasing the target from the front, Travis Head played a brilliant inning of 123 runs in just 83 balls and with the help of a patient half-century from Marnus Labuschagne, Australia won by eight wickets.

With the first Test ending within two days, the Australian team has taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. While the win set the tone for a challenging Ashes series, the two-day finale left a huge gap of several million dollars in the Australian board’s earnings.

Cricket Australia faces a blow of AU$3 million as the first Ashes Test ends in 2 days

It is being said that Cricket Australia (CA) is going to lose more than AU$3 million after the first Ashes match in Perth ends in just two days. Travis Head’s disastrous innings and England’s careless buzzball approach were the reasons behind the two-day conclusion of the game, leaving Cricket Australia with no ticket revenue on the third and fourth days.

These figures make the loss even more painful for CA. A massive crowd of 101,514 watched the action at the Optus Stadium over the first two days – 51,531 on the first day and 49,983 on the second.

This broke Perth’s previous Test attendance record of 96,463, set the previous year when India played there. Almost all the tickets were sold out on the third day of the Perth Test, meaning CA was deprived of another big earning.

CA chief Todd Greenberg predicts huge losses

Before play resumed on the second day against England on 22 November, with Australia’s first innings still underway, CA chief executive Todd Greenberg had already expressed concerns that the match might not reach the third day.

Greenberg acknowledged that an early closure would cause losses to Cricket Australia through broadcasters, sponsors, partners and, of course, ticket sales. He told SEN: “It’s difficult for a lot of different groups. First of all our broadcasters. Certainly us on ticket sales, and our partners and sponsors. There’s a huge economic impact on this series.”
