Both Indian and Australian cricketers were seen wearing black armbands while taking the field for the second T20I at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on October 31.
The first match of the series played between India and Australia in the capital Canberra was washed out due to rain. They have now moved to Melbourne, a ground that has witnessed one of the most intense and spectacular contests in the history of Indian cricket.
However, India started the game with another tragic loss in the toss. Then the Australian captain and the Indian captain were seen with black bands for the first time, which created curiosity on the internet. With no rain predicted today, this will be the first full match of the series.
Why do Indian and Australian players wear black bands?
Australian cricket suffered a major tragedy on Thursday when 17-year-old cricketer Ben Austin passed away after being seriously injured by a ball during a practice session on Wednesday. Austin’s death has cast a cloud of sadness in Australian cricket.
As it turns out, Australian and Indian cricketers are wearing black armbands to pay tribute to the young cricketer who lost his life on the field. Really kind step taken by the Indian national side as well as BCCI.
Both teams stood in silence for a minute along with match officials and representatives of Austin Cricket Club. The huge MCG crowd of about 75000 also stood in his respect as his image was projected on the big screen.
Women of India and Australia also wore black bands in the ICC World Cup semi-final match.
