Team India’s middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer issued an official statement after suffering a ruptured spleen and rib injury during the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney last week. The ODI vice-captain said that he is currently recovering from the setback and is getting better with each passing day.

BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia dismissed reports which claimed that Shreyas had undergone surgery for his injury. He clarified that the batsman had to undergo a medical procedure rather than surgery to control internal bleeding from the injured spleen. Saikia said that Iyer’s recovery has been faster than expected.

Iyer wrote, “I am currently in the process of recovery and getting better with each passing day. I am so grateful to see all the well wishes and support I have received – it really means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts .”

During the third ODI against Australia at the SCG, Shreyas Iyer was injured while taking a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the 34th over. After completing the catch, he landed awkwardly and appeared to be in severe pain. He walked off the field but did not return for the remainder of the innings.

Iyer’s condition deteriorated after being rushed to Sydney Hospital, where scans revealed internal bleeding from a ruptured spleen, requiring him to be admitted to the ICU.

This is not the first time that Iyer has suffered a serious injury while fielding. He dislocated his shoulder during the 2020 series against England and has also been battling recurring back problems, which has forced him to take a break from red-ball cricket.
