Prithvi Shaw returned to form in spectacular fashion as he smashed a brilliant double century for Maharashtra in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025-26 group match against Chandigarh and it came at a record-breaking pace at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh.
It seems that moving from Mumbai to Maharashtra has given a new lease of life to Prithvi Shaw’s career, as he played a explosive inning of 222 runs in just 156 balls against Chandigarh in the second round match. After being dismissed for just eight runs, Shaw came out aggressively on all cylinders in the second innings.

The right-handed batsman completed his first century of the current domestic season in just 72 balls, the sixth fastest century in Ranji Trophy history, and then scored a double century in just 141 balls – the second fastest century in the long history of the Elite Group.

Only Ravi Shastri’s double century in 123 balls against Baroda in the 1984–85 season is the fastest double century in Ranji Trophy history. Prithvi Shaw’s innings was pure dominance, which included 29 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 142 against Chandigarh.
Shaw’s timing, placement and aggressive intent reflected the fearless stroke-maker who single-handedly dismantled the Chandigarh bowling attack. With this incredible innings, Shaw joined an elite list along with Virender Sehwag as only the second Indian to score multiple double centuries in first-class cricket within 200 balls.

Sehwag achieved the feat of scoring a double century within 200 balls thrice in Test cricket for India. However, the fastest first-class double century by an Indian still belongs to Hyderabad’s Tanmay Agarwal, who achieved the feat in 119 balls earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Prithvi Shaw’s record-breaking innings also ended his 20-month century drought, which he last hit for Mumbai in February 2024. After being out for a duck in his opening game for Maharashtra against Kerala, Shaw’s explosive comeback shows that his hunger, strength and flair are very much alive, and he has staked a strong case for a comeback in India.
