Chennai Super Kings were keen on a trade deal, and they have finally made one, but it is not for wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson. CSK have struck a deal with Gujarat Titans to include Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin in IPL 2026.
Chennai Super Kings and Ravichandran Ashwin have mutually decided to part ways after the IPL 2025 season, with Ashwin returning to the franchise where he started his IPL campaign. He was bought by Super Kings for Rs 9.75 crore.
CSK has confirmed Washington Sundar’s trade deal with Gujarat Titans.
Ever since Ashwin was out of the CSK playing eleven, they have been looking for an all-rounder of his stature. Washington Sundar could be the best option for Ashwin’s Team India and Chennai has got the perfect deal.

Gujarat Titans had acquired the all-rounder at a price of Rs 3 in the mega-auction₹20 crore and there will be huge profits from the sale of the player in a trade with the Super Kings. Batting in 5 innings, Sundar scored 133 runs at a strike rate of 166.25 and took 2 wickets with the ball.

Sundar will pair with Ravindra Jadeja for CSK after both of them performed brilliantly for India.
At this time, Washington Sundar would like to stay at Gujarat Titans; However, since the Titans agreed to the trade, he will have to be released. However, considering Sundar’s recent antics in international cricket and his growing prominence in the Indian side, Washington could make a big-budget move for Sundar in the mini-auction.
With the arrival of Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brewis, Chennai Super Kings have shown dominance at the top of the order. They will need a batsman to add depth to their batting along with Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dubey.
India’s two spin all-rounders have performed brilliantly with both bat and ball for India in Test cricket and will now pair up for the first time in the IPL for CSK. Sundar, who hails from Tamil Nadu, is well aware of the conditions and will not be kept in the Chennai camp now, as Chepauk often demands additional all-rounders.
Does Sundar deal mean that CSK are no longer interested in the Sanju Samson deal?
Chennai seems to be interested in Sanju Samson’s deal with Rajasthan Royals as they have also started talks with the IPL franchise. However, it was reported that the Royals made an unfair offer on the Samson deal, which the Super Kings could not agree to.
Washington Sundar joining the CSK team could indicate that CSK is no longer looking to trade Sanju Samson. Even if they consider bringing in the wicketkeeper, it will be only after the Royals release him in the mini-auction.
