Indian cricket is currently watching a storm of debate around leadership and batting roles after the height of Shubman Gill as India’s ODI captain. Rohit Sharma was recently dismissed, and Shubman Gill has been handed over the reins of the ODI team by the BCCI after the Test Captain.
Gill is now the captain of India’s ODI and Test teams in addition to Suryakumar Yadav being deputy in T20Is. Reacting in a hurry to BCCI, former Indian batsman Robin Uthappa has expressed strong doubts about becoming a gill in the near future.
Robin Uthappa Question Shubman Gill’s all-format captaincy possibility
Uthappa has reported that the young Indian captain still needs to establish himself in the shortest format of the game. He believes that if the BCCI wants to change the T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer is a strong option, which has been given his success with three different teams – KKR, PBK and DC in the IPL.

Robin Uthappa said in a video on his YouTube channel, “I get one day and test cricket, and I think he is a solid pick in Test cricket, and he has shown us that as far as OD cricket is concerned, I think his number is good, but I think they are still better for a player.”
India’s second opening slot is open after Shubman Gill’s Asia Cup 2025 setback
The Asia Cup 2025 performance has intensified the competition for India’s second early place. Shubman Gill struggled in the tournament, which opened the door for other candidates. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson are already a serious threat to the posts of vice-captains at the top.
The former Indian batsman said that Abhishek Sharma has already strengthened his position as a opener after his Asia Cup 2025 heroes, has still left second place for tombs in T20I. However, Uthappa admitted that Iyer is currently out of the T20I side, but he remains a serious contender, especially in the ideas of leadership in the small format of the game.
He added, “The second opener slot is still very open. As far as I am concerned, there can be someone who can come there. Sanju can definitely come there.”

Vice-Capanesei does not mean much: Robin Uthappa
Uthappa insisted that the sub-captaincy team in Indian cricket does not guarantee the final promotion in full captaincy, citing rapid change in the dynamics and selection policies.
Gill’s leadership in ODIs and tests will be closely viewed, especially in high pressure tournaments. He feels that Gill should first cement his place in T20is; Till then, he is out of the picture for captaincy.
Uthappa signed, saying, “I still think Gill needs to secure his location first. Therefore, I don’t think it will be given in the sense where he will be the captain or he will be in the next line. We know, and we have seen Indian cricket changes overnight; things change very quickly.
