The upcoming version of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is expected to be played in early January 2026, as the tournament men’s 2026 ICC T20 is expected to be completed before the start of the World Cup.
Currently, Mumbai Indians are the defending champions of WPL, as they defeated Delhi capitals for the second time in the final. Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise with 2 titles, while Royal Challengers Bangalore women have won 1 title. Gujarat giants and UP Warrier are other teams in WPL.
Women’s Premier League 2026 schedule revealed
The fourth season of the Women’s Premier League is to be held in January 2026, a franchise-tier tournament for women cricketers in India. The Times of India has reported that WPL has been transferred from the February-March window to the month of January.

The tournament has been prepared due to men’s completion before the men’s 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, which will be co-condemned by India and Sri Lanka. The ICC event will be held in the same window as February-March.
“The tournament is likely to start on 6 January or 8 January 2026” a source told TOI. The tournament is being upgraded, it also means that the auction of WPL, which is usually held in December, can be held in November this time.
WPL is quoted as the reason behind the success of young Indian women
Just before the opening match of the ODI series between India and Australia at the Punjab Cricket Association’s Mulanpur Stadium, Indian women captain Harmanpreet Kaur also praised WPL, the way Indian youth have come in recent days.
“She (young women cricketers of Team India) have been very exciting. There was a big difference between domestic and international cricket four or five years ago. But in the last five-six years, with a back-to-back matches, young girls are very better ready.”
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur said, “Players like Kranti (Gaud) and Pratika (Rawal) came to look ready, not that they did not need extra time. It is a very big positive. WPL has also played a big role in closing that difference. I hope that he will continue to perform,” said Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur.
Amol mazumdar coins as “integral part” in the progress of players wpl
The Indian team won their first T20I series on English soil against England, head coach, Amol Majumdar credited India’s achievement to domestic tournaments. He mentioned that WPL has played an integral role in the success of Indian women cricketers.
“WPL has been an integral part of the progress of the players. There is no doubt. But there are other tournaments in India, which we really keep a good look at. Many domestic players are playing.”
Indian women’s team coach Amol Majumdar said, “WPL is a part of BCCI initiative. Therefore, I think it is a pleasant hunting field for us, WPL. But at the same time, there are other tournaments that take importance.”
