The West Indies National Cricket Team has shocked fans and cricket experts except for the second Test Vice-Capten, Jomel Warrican for the second Test of the three-match Test series against Australia at the Granada National Cricket Stadium in St. George.

Warrican was released from Playi XI after just one match in the role of his leadership. The shocking call was taken in the midst of the three-match Test series against Australia, which identified the start of the West Indies ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 bicycle.

Jomel Warrican gets only 8 overs in 1 Test, then dropped from 2 Tests

After a complete shake-up in its leadership structure after the visit of Pakistan earlier this year, the West Indies National Cricket Team appointed Darren Sammy as the head coach, Roston Chase as the captain, and appointed Joler Warrican as the vice-captain. All of them were selected by Cricket West Indies (CWI) through “strong, data-conducted selection process”.

Warrican was expected to be the team’s prominent spinner. But the first trial in Barbados exposed a mismatch in planning and sports positions. On a pitch offering a lot to the seamers, Warrican got a chance to make an impact against the most powerful Australians.

The West Indies vice-captains did not bowl the same bowling in Australia’s first innings, where visitors were dismissed for only 180. The hosts only used part -time spinner and Captain Roston Chase, who bowled four overs. In the second innings, Warrican was introduced as the fifth bowler.

Roston Chase revealed

He bowled eight overs and conceded just 18 runs, but failed to take wickets. On the other hand, Roston Chase bowled in just one over and hit Sona with one wicket-meden. Despite being the vice-captain and senior spinner, Warrican is now shown the door for another test.

Fast bowler, Anderson Philip, replaced the XI in XI to load the speed attack on another semen-friendly pitch at the Granada National Cricket Stadium for the second Test against Australia. And this step took many eyebrows.

Confirming the change in the toss, Captain Roston Chase said, “Anderson Philip comes to Joil Warrican, as it is a more semen-friendly wicket.”

West Indies faced heat after Jomel Warrican overtook his 101st first -class match

Leaving a vice-captain after just one match, especially selected through a new data-supported strategy, once again placed the CWI under the radar. In particular, Warrican was on the verge of a major milestone, but he missed the opportunity after being demolished against the second Test.

If the 33 -year -old West Indies spinner was selected for the second test going on, it would be his 101st first -class match. Warrican has an impressive red ball career. In 20 Tests, he has taken 73 wickets on an average of 27.80.

His overall first -class record is even more notable, taking 401 wickets at a great average of 20.58. The veteran left -arm spinner returned his debut in 2009, but despite a long career, he has played just three T20s focusing on long formats of the game.

On the other hand, Anderson Philip made a strong comeback in Test cricket after his first test against Bangladesh in 2022. He had immediate effect by taking his first wicket in the 12th over. He was caught behind Australia’s opener Sam Constas, stumps.
