New Year’s Eve brought an exciting moment in the SA20 league as Sherfane Rutherford and Dewald Brewis produced brilliant performances with the bat. Playing for Pretoria Capitals, the pair hit six sixes off six consecutive balls in two overs against MI Cape Town in the eighth match of the 2025-26 season.

After this Shai Hope and Vihaan Lubbe came together and concentrated on building the innings. He rotated the strike well and slowly rebuilt, helping the team recover and cross 100.

Hope scored 45 runs in 30 balls before getting out in the 15th over. Showing patience and clean hitting, Lubbe completed his half-century in 31 balls. He was out at the start of the 16th over after scoring 60 runs in 36 balls, leaving Pretoria at 134 for 5.

At that stage, the team looked unlikely to cross 180. However, the solid base laid by Hope and Lubbe allowed the batsmen to attack at the death, changing the pace and setting up a stronger finish than expected.

Sherfane Rutherford and Dewald Brewis wreaked havoc and hit sixes each.

Sherfane Rutherford and Dewald Brewis attacked the MI Cape Town bowlers in the final overs. In the 18th over, Brewis hit two consecutive sixes on the fifth and sixth balls of Corbin Bosch.

Rutherford continued the attack in the 19th over. He hit four consecutive sixes on the first four balls of Dwayne Pretorius. This accomplished the rare feat of six sixes in six balls in two overs.

Rutherford remained unbeaten on 47 off just 15 balls, hitting six sixes at a strike rate of 313.33. Brewis remained unbeaten on 36 runs in 13 balls with the help of four sixes and one four at a strike rate of 276.92. Rutherford and Brewis added 86 runs from 30 balls, 72 of which came in the last three overs alone.

Sherfane Rutherford was named player of the match for his all-round talent

MI Cape Town started the chase with confidence and scored 63 runs for 1 wicket in the first six overs. The Capitals dropped three catches inside the first 10 overs and despite chasing the big target, the hosts looked in good shape.

However, this momentum was not sustained as wickets kept falling in the middle overs. Nicholas Pooran scored 25 runs at a strike rate of over 400, but he faced only six balls. Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks together added 46 runs but could not accelerate.

The lower order failed to contribute, with only one batsman outside the top four reaching double figures. Corbin Bosch remained unbeaten after scoring 10 runs in eight balls. Ryan Rickelton, who was dismissed twice, top-scored with 33 runs from 17 balls.

Sherfane Rutherford also won the game with the ball. He took 4 wickets for 24 runs in three overs, which was his best bowling, while Keshav Maharaj took three wickets for 28 runs in three overs. Rutherford’s impact with both bat and ball earned him the Player of the Match award.
